Our DBA: Hillside Services Insurance Agency & Brokerage was established in November 1979, authorized to transact insurance business in California under license number 0579972
Our name represents a merger of two ideas, (1) non insurance but related services to California high fire hazard or W.U.I ( wildfire urban interface) areas (2) insurance availability issues constantly afflicting this market. The theme is " get the most out of the insurance you have and get rid of the insurance you have that does not work." Aren't most people actually under-insured. Yes, but that does not necessarily mean that buying more insurance will solve the problem, is some cases. More on that, later.
We not only understand this market, we live it. The agency owner, Douglas E Nadybal, was born, raised, lives in the So. California fire area.
We view the entire matter of securing a W.U.I. home as an asset protection issue. Asset protection is the development of a plan with the goal of obstructing creditors from taking away your personal assets in such a way that you have not agreed to. In the broader financial sense this could anything and everything include lawyers suing you for negligence, investment losses, taxes, long term care expenses, and so on. The general idea is to construct a financial identity that deters creditors from coming after you. The application to insurance in the W.U.I. is very similar. When you bring a claim on your insurance, there will be placed in your path many obstacles that try to deter you from receiving your insurance benefits in part or full. If and when you do get the money, then there will be many offering their services, all who would like as much of your insurance benefit as possible. Because nearly everyone lacks experience in dealing with the fallout from losing a home to fire, earthquake, etc., most are then somewhat helpless about how to navigate the recovery process, just as would an inexperienced investor be more likely to be abused in the financial markets. The solution then is to create obstacles that deter would be abusers. The question then becomes, other than obtaining insurance, what else can we do to make our insurance, our home and our life more secure?
There is a great irony. For the average W.U.I. resident, the average duration of time from fire loss to rebuild is about 3 years. So, in other words, in about the amount of time required to build one house, the United States of America during World War 2, built thousands of tanks, airplanes, outfitted and trained and transported tens of thousands of soldiers, and then brought them across oceans to defeat multiple adversaries, we now cannot build one house. The word/term SNAFU comes to mind. How can this be?
Whatever reason, the current system is corruptible. The only way to overcome it and speed it up, just like in asset protection, is advanced planning and action. During the insurance claims process you will at various points be asked to prove and attest to certain things. Where as you might have thought then when you filed your claim you passed the heavy lifting over to the insurance company you actually did not. What you did was simply assert a right as a policy holder to make a claim and prove your what you say happened, when you say it did, for the reason you said was the cause and exactly what it was you lost and what was the value of each item. Forget about it. You see now how the playing field has tilted in favor of the insurance company. They are now the judge and it is you who, the victim who suffered the loss, is the one trial.
That is not so easy to do, proving your loss after a loss when your home is a rubble pile. Picture yourself inviting a friend out to lunch and you mention that your home just burned down. They ask, "what did you lose ?" You respond "everything". They pull out a notepad and pen and ask you for an itemized list. Being in a state of shock from losing your home, you omit several hundred items. Your friend asks you for a value for each item, and then asks you to prove each one. Your friend is like the insurance company. While you house was standing, they were a good friend. Now that it is not, you wonder where your friend went. They are now your task master and gate keeper over you getting your life back. Mental health experts say that losing your home to fire ranks right up there with other major stressors, not too far down the list from a messy divorce.
It seems to us, that we have the insurance process backwards. We purchase an amount of coverage, without really knowing the value of what we have, or even what we have. Without knowing that, how did we arrive at the amount of insurance we now have? You see the problem. You are trying to prove something you really don't know!
The reality of the problem is that practically nobody has the time or desire to account for what we have and value it. Why would we do that when we estimate the probability of loss is not that high. It can happen to me, but it probably won't. So, we just guess at the amount. What if we guess WRONG?
Well, if we under-guess, then we may not get our house and our stuff back. And if we over-guess, we waste a lot of money by paying for insurance year after year after year.
And, guessing is not allowed anyways. Guessing is not proof, and you have to prove your loss.
So, here is the point and the value offer to you, the high fire hazard property owner.
Let's stop guessing. Lack of proof leaves you in a terribly weak position when negotiating an insurance claim.
As we see it, there are 5 ways to strengthen your hand, if done in advance.
5. Asset Protection
The details of each of the 5 steps will are given to you by clicking on each to another page link, but only current clients can see them. What you need to know is that we take on good portion of your work on ourselves as part of our comprehensive service, under one identity, Hillside Services. For years we have advised our clients about the necessity of each step. Most lack the time or tools to do it themselves, and the cost is too high to hire people. So basically we operate an assistance program, where we furnish you with the right tools to plow through the process much faster. We assist with the organizing of the process with staff time dedicated to you. Basically, we are investing part of what we earn from you as a client, back in you.
We apologize for the length of this "About Us" page. It is actually about you. You already know a little from the home page of what kind of financial loss you could incur from lacking a comprehensive asset protection plan for your house. Years out of your house, with the possibility of never getting back. Massive out of pocket expenses.
On its surface, what could be more simple than fire insurance? How difficult could that be to get right?
The problem is the rigors of the claims process. That is when the mistakes and omissions or wrong decisions come to light. But by then, it is too late.
Our 5 step process, essentially is a dry run for a claim process.
